Normal Hair Growth and Loss

Hair has a three-stage growth cycle. The anagen or growth stage lasts from two to eight years. Approximately 90 percent of your hair is in this stage. The catagen stage is a transition between growth and rest that lasts two to three weeks. The telogen or rest cycle lasts from two to four months. Anything that disrupts this cycle can result in greater than normal hair loss. Normally, you may lose 50 to 100 strands each day and up to 250 strands when you wash your hair.

Causes of Hair Loss

Many conditions and circumstances can result in hair loss, including:
  • Chemotherapy
  • Radiation
  • Burns resulting in loss of hair or lashes
  • Thinning hair
  • Skin disorders
  • Alopecia or baldness

Signs of Unusual Hair Loss

Women and men are equally likely to experience hair loss or thinning hair. In women, pattern baldness occurs over the top one-third to two-thirds of the head rather than from the forehead to the crown as it does in men. Consequently, women may notice that a part looks wider or that more scalp shows when they pull their hair back. Other signs include unusual amounts of hair in your comb or on your pillow.
